POTENTIAL OF HAMAMATSU AREA

One of the best industry-university-government cooperation systems in Japan
In the Hamamatsu area, academic research institutions including Shizuoka University (Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Information, and Research Institute of Electronics) and Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, R&D companies having highly sophisticated technologies, and public testing and research organizations such as Hamamatsu Industrial Research Institute of Shizuoka Prefecture, have been working together in a cooperative manner for the development of new technologies and new products. Local industry support organizations such as governmental organizations, the Hamamatsu Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and Organization for Hamamatsu Technopolis are closely tied together to provide substantial support for the collaboration of industries, universities and government.
Here in this area, we make full use of this good and strong tie-up between industries, universities and government to promote projects for creating new technologies and industries, such as "Hit-Vit Three-area (East Aichi, West Shizuoka, and South Nagano) Vitalization (Industrial Cluster)" and "Regional Cooperative Research Project."
The Hamamatsu area is designated as a "region specially designated for promoting integration of photonic technology-related industries" to promote integration of the photonic technology-related industries.

Leading role in nation's imaging science research
Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University
Research Institute of Electronics,
Shizuoka University
Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University was set up in honor of Professor Kenjiro Takayanagi who was the first in the world to invent television. Since then, it has been engaged in state-of-the-art imaging research to play a leading role in imaging science. This includes research on electronic materials, electronic devices and electronic systems, as well as basic research involving the nature of light and the interaction of light with matter, and development of basic technology on applications thereof.

Organization of cutting-edge medical research at molecular level
Photon Medical Research Center, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine
Photon Medical Research Center,
Hamamatsu University School of Medicine
Photon Medical Research Center, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine conducts cutting-edge life science research on applying photonic technology to medical science, including research on using light for measurement and medical treatment, research on effects of light on living organisms, and R&D work on measuring devices and diagnostic testing devices using new photonic technology. The Center has made major contributions such as the world's first observation of molecules moving across the surface of cell membranes.

Integration of leading-edge high-technology companies
The Hamamatsu area is one of the leading industrial districts in Japan thriving on region's high technological prowess and plenty of manpower, as well as vital spirits unique to the region which drives the people to tackle any difficulties. This area includes global corporations making products ranging from electronic musical instruments to transport devices, and companies on the forefront of technology involving photonics and imaging. Also included are a number of R&D companies having highly sophisticated technologies and proprietary know-how.
